When the output driver is enabled, the pin can both sink and source current to external devices. This design of I/O pin is used in the PIC microcontroller; later in the book I will explain the operation of the I/O pins in greater detail. A microcontroller may also have more advanced peripheral functions built into its I/O pins, such as the ability to send and receive serial I/O that will allow communication with a PC via RS-232. These peripheral functions are designed to simplify the interfacing to other devices.
